Fascinating finds on the campus of Unity Village
Sometimes I’m a little scatterbrained. Being the dad of a

4- and 1-year-old will do that to you. My morning usually
starts with me trudging to my office in search of caffeine
and not paying much attention to my surroundings. But in
a recent moment of unusual clarity, I happened to notice
something I’d never looked at closely before.
All things work together for good. That affirmation
along with nine others—all etched in clear plastic panels,
backlit, and shining down at me—hit me with a jolt of
energy. They line the upper edge of the circular walls of
the Room of Shining Words, built as a reception area in
the Administration Building. I walk past this open area
or through its heavy wooden doors to the courtyard
almost every day, but I’d never just stood in this space
and looked around.
Completed in late 1949 and early 1950, the Room of
Shining Words is another example of Rickert Fillmore’s
design genius. The room is adorned with walnut paneling
and wainscoted copper panels. In the center of its ceiling
is a dome that creates an echo effect when anyone
speaks when standing directly under it. The affirmations
displayed here (which Unity lore holds were favorites of
cofounder Charles Fillmore), accented by eye-catching
lighting, give the room its name.
The Room of Shining Words has been a favorite spot
for Unity tourists, workers, and Truth students since its
inception. Rev. Mark Fuss, director of Unity Outreach and
Engagement, says it’s a go-to place when he takes guests on
tours of the campus.
“One by one they come to stand in the center of the room

under the domed ceiling and speak an affirmation aloud,”
Fuss explains. “My instructions to them are to speak the
words with power and conviction. Often people are startled
or moved to tears as they feel the vibration of the words
resonate in their bodies as a result of the effect of the dome.
It’s a dramatic demonstration of the power and vibration
created by affirmation.”
For Rev. Leddy Hammock of Unity Church of
Clearwater, Florida, who grew up at Unity Village,
the Room of Shining Words is a sacred space. “I must
have witnessed this experience a hundred times,” she
remembers. “People would step in for the first time, stand,
and gaze around the curved wooden entry area and read
the affirmations.” Many would feel led to sit in prayerful
contemplation on the room’s deep red-cushioned benches
along the wall, “silently rereading the powerful words. It
was—and is still—a place of awe and reflection.”
