They told me they came to teach me about Jesus, who
they simply called “J,” and about their experiences of
being his disciples 2,000 years ago. They visited me 17
times throughout a period of nine years, and I recorded
our conversations in my first book, The Disappearance
of the Universe (originally published by Fearless Books
in 2003 and republished by Hay House in 2004). In that
book and the three that followed, my teachers clarified the
principles of the modern spiritual masterpiece called A
Course in Miracles.
A Course in Miracles says something very interesting
about the Holy Spirit: “His is the Voice for God, and has
therefore taken form. This form is not his reality.” In other
words, the Holy Spirit has taken on a form to communicate
with us. If it didn’t we’d never be able to hear it, and we’d
be stuck in the world of illusion forever. It is the Holy
Spirit’s job to lead us back to God. The most common way
the Holy Spirit communicates with most of us is through
When it’s deemed helpful or necessary, however, the
Holy Spirit will take on a more specific form. For example,
the Holy Spirit may appear to some as an angel, such as
the archangel Michael. For religious people—especially
Catholics—the Holy Spirit could appear as the Virgin
Mary. For some New Age thinkers, the Ascended Master St.
Germaine has been appearing at Mount Shasta for decades.
But it’s really the Holy Spirit appearing as Michael or Mary
or St. Germaine.
In each of these cases, the form the Holy Spirit takes is
symbolic. That symbol may appear to be very real, yet it’s
the reality behind it that matters. The communication will
be whatever is best at the time for the person who sees it.
Apparently for me, what was best was for my Ascended
Master friends Arten and Pursah (who I sometimes refer to
as A and P) to come to me as people and put very advanced
spiritual ideas in a language most of us can understand and
apply in our lives.
As for the feeling I had all my life that something was
missing, ACIM explained exactly what was missing, not
just for me but for others as well: “A sense of separation
from God is the only lack you really need correct.” If you
could correct that one real lack, then all the others would
take care of themselves. You’d always feel as though you
were being taken care of, guided by Spirit and provided
for. In fact, the word inspired comes from the words
“in spirit.” The Holy Spirit can inspire you and lead you
through your life.
Through three series of visits, A and P presented the
teachings of Jesus found in ACIM in such a way that I could
not only comprehend but also live them. The first three
books came together like a hologram in which my teachers
explained how three of their lifetimes were connected. The
story was fascinating and the teachings dazzled me. The
trilogy clearly pointed the way to enlightenment.
Through the years I had gotten very good at
channeling A and P through my mind, even when they
weren’t appearing to me in person. Because I was so
amazed at their presence, I’d sometimes forget to ask
them things I meant to ask. After the third book had
been published, I remembered a few related questions I
had always wanted to ask but hadn’t: How did Jesus get to
be Jesus? How did Buddha get to be Buddha? What were
they like in the incarnations before they were Jesus and
Buddha? What did they study and how did they practice
in a way that enabled them to achieve enlightenment
before the rest of us?
The result was another book, The Lifetimes When
Jesus and Buddha Knew Each Other, published this past
November by Hay House. My teachers told me the stories
of six different incarnations in which Jesus and Buddha (or
J and B, as I sometimes call them) knew each other, had
different kinds of relationships, and studied and practiced
with great spiritual teachers. In these incarnations, they
became totally uncompromising in their choice for reality
instead of illusion, which they further refined into the idea
of being a dream that we will awaken from. This awakening
This involves choosing to see the world through the
eyes of the Holy Spirit instead of through the ego. Where
the ego thinks in terms of separation from God and from
others, the Holy Spirit thinks in terms of oneness and
wholeness. Choosing the Holy Spirit involves a certain kind
of forgiveness, one that does not make the illusion real.
With this choice, we can think in terms of reality being
perfect oneness, and whatever we choose will eventually
become our experience.
I was very grateful to learn about J and B’s lifetimes as
Shintos in Japan, Hindus in India, students of Plato in
Greece, and studying Taoism with Lao Tzu in China, as
well as to learn more about their incarnations as Buddha
and Jesus. (Not surprisingly, each was present in the life
of the other during both those incarnations.) All of this
learning came together for them and resulted in the full
awareness of the truth.
My goal now is to completely live the teachings and
awaken in the same way as they did. This will happen for
all of us. We are all going home. It’s not a question of
if—it’s a question of when. As Jesus said 2,000 years ago
(according to A and P), “Heaven is like a wedding, and
everyone is invited.”
