most remarkable thing happened before I walked
down the aisle,” my friend told me. I smiled,
guessing what might come next. “I stopped being
nervous and felt perfectly calm and happy.”
When someone is injured or ill, fear can loom
large, so trusting in a loving God or Universe to
manifest our good becomes essential. Before a
scheduled surgery, my friend Diana envisioned
a caring, dedicated, highly competent team
of doctors and nurses operating on her while
they listened to soothing music in a brightly lit,
sparkling clean room. She relaxed, let go, and
trusted in a loving universe. Her surgery went
smoothly and she recovered quickly.
Similarly, when I had an amniocentesis, I
asked for a quiet two minutes before the doctor
and technician began the procedure. After
breathing deeply, I relaxed my muscles and
mentally left my body to be in one of my favorite
places. Then, I let go and let God. In both our
circumstances, our trust made challenging
medical events free from fear.
After I shared these stories with a close friend,
she soon had an opportunity to try the same
sort of technique. She was rock climbing with
a group when her friend Carin fell 15 to 20 feet
and twisted her ankle when her foot hit a ledge.
As my friend drove her injured companion to an
urgent care center, they talked about how hard it
was going to be for Carin to rest her body while
her ankle healed because she was used to being
very active. Carin was scared that it was going
to be a bad break that might require months of
recovery, or even surgery.
Remembering my stories, my friend decided
to speak to the Universe directly. “Carin is one
of your biggest fans!” she said out loud. “Every
single day, she gets outside to appreciate and bask
in the bounty and wonder of your natural beauty.
While we understand that she may need to rest
for a week or two, we know she will be strong,
healthy, and well again. Very soon, she will be
ready to pursue outdoor activities that help her
The doctors x-rayed Carin’s ankle, and they
were all blown away by the results. Despite
Carin’s description of the fall and her pain, no
breaks or fissures showed on the X-ray at all. She
was left with only some bruises and a light, soft-
tissue sprain! The doctor recommended she rest
for one to three weeks before resuming activity.
Upon hearing the news, Carin looked at my
friend and said, “The Universe provides!”
The seeds of my being are the result of my
choices. A Course in Miracles makes the idea
of choosing very simple. We can either choose
love or fear—the only two emotions that exist.
Whenever I have made a decision out of fear, it
has been the wrong one; the one that leads me
away from my highest good.
Thoughts are things. Thoughts are not
nothing and they are certainly not neutral. Our
thoughts set up an energy pattern around us
that attracts like things. If we sow pessimistic,
fearful thoughts, we are commanding negative
circumstances and depressing environments
to grow. But if we choose love, think love,
and become love, we are sowing optimistic
seeds that mandate positive outcomes and
thriving environments. Through focus, clarity,
emotion, and trust, we become the rightful
masters of our lives.
We can either choose
love or fear—
the only two
emotions that exist.
